The Lonesome George Story: Where Do We Go From Here?

The Lonesome George Story: Where Do We Go From Here? was written by Galápagos Conservancy’s Science Advisor Dr. Linda Cayot. Dr. Cayot has dedicated more than thirty years to Galápagos conservation, with a special emphasis on Giant Tortoises, and spent years working with Lonesome George — the last known tortoise from Pinta Island who died in June of 2012.

Infused with a rich history of Lonesome George’s island of Pinta, Dr. Cayot’s book recounts the many people who worked with Lonesome George since he was found in the early 1970s — including his long-time caretaker Fausto Llerena — and efforts to encourage Lonesome George to produce offspring, which were ultimately unsuccessful. The Lonesome George Story explores the life of this famous tortoise and how his death has fueled conservation efforts to evade the threat of future extinctions.

More than 30 color photos are included in the book, along with quotes from many people who worked with Lonesome George — both during his life, and in death while his body was preserved for posterity.
