The Art of Recycling in the Hands of Children

Experts in childhood development say that art fosters creativity and imagination in children, but it can also be an effective tool in teaching the importance of caring for the environment. With the support of Galápagos Conservancy, Patricia Solano, an enterprising Santa Cruz Island resident, carried out a project that helped 12 children from the “Los Túneles” neighborhood in the Bellavista parish develop their creativity and environmental awareness at the same time.
Solano’s project started in August 2022, and every Saturday for three months, children between the ages of 7 and 12 developed basic drawing and painting skills, learned how to combine colors, and used recycled wood to create their own works of art, which they can later sell. By using recycled materials, the children learned about sustainability in a fun way.
Solano believes it is essential to teach children from a young age the importance of reusing materials to create new objects. “Children can create their own interpretation of the animals and plants they see in Galápagos, which helps them better understand diversity and the importance of protecting nature,” she said.
Lenin Rogel, the Education Coordinator of Galápagos Conservancy and its sister organization Conservando Galápagos, applauds Solano’s initiative. “We are proud to finance this type of educational endeavor, which provides children with spaces to explore their creativity, enhance their skills, and understand the importance of recycling,” he said.

El arte del reciclaje en manos de los más pequeños
Los expertos aseguran que el arte es una herramienta eficaz para fomentar la creatividad y la imaginación en los niños, pero también es usado para enseñarles la importancia del cuidado del ambiente.
Con el apoyo de Galápagos Conservancy, Patricia Solano, una mujer emprendedora, residente de la isla Santa Cruz, llevó a cabo un proyecto que ayudó a 12 niños del barrio “Los Túneles” de la Parroquia de Bellavista, a desarrollar su creatividad y su conciencia ambiental al mismo tiempo.
Su proyecto inició en agosto de 2022, y por 3 meses, cada sábado los niños, entre 7 y 12 años, desarrollaron destrezas básicas de dibujo y pintura, aprendieron a combinar colores y a utilizar la madera reciclada para crear sus propias obras de arte, que posteriormente las pueden comercializar.
Esta iniciativa tiene además un enfoque de sostenibilidad, pues promueve una cultura de reciclaje. Patricia asegura que es importante enseñar a los niños, desde temprana edad, la importancia de reutilizar materiales para la creación de nuevos objetos. “Los niños pueden crear su propia interpretación de los animales y plantas que ven en Galápagos, esto les ayuda a comprender mejor la diversidad y la importancia de proteger la naturaleza”, señaló.
Por su parte, el Coordinador de Educación de Conservando Galápagos y su filial, Galápagos Conservancy, Lenin Rogel, aplaude la iniciativa de Patricia, dijo, “nos sentimos orgullosos de financiar este tipo de emprendimientos educativos, que brindan a los niños espacios para explorar su creatividad, potenciar sus habilidades y comprender la importancia del reciclaje”.
