San Cristóbal Youth Have Fun Learning English and Environmental Stewardship

Most parents in the Galápagos Islands understand the importance of teaching their children English, especially because the community relies heavily on tourism, and speaking English facilitates these activities.
For the past two decades, William Puga, a permanent resident of the Galápagos Islands, has encouraged San Cristóbal youth to learn English. He guarantees that the younger the child begins to study English (or another language), the easier and more beneficial it will be.
At the same time, William uses English language learning as an environmental education tool to teach youth about the importance of Galápagos biodiversity. William established the Bilingual Ecological Community Center in 1995 to educate the local population on environmental issues through experiential learning programs emphasizing the importance of protecting and preserving the Island’s ecosystems.
Since September 2022, Galápagos Conservancy has been supporting this educational project with a Conservation Action Grant to strengthen experiential learning activities, such as coastal cleanups, environmentally friendly vacations, and city ornamentation through artistic murals with environmental awareness messaging, among other things.
This program currently serves 70 children. Students gain access to different cultures by learning English, which enriches their education and intellectual development while giving them a more open mind about the world and their relationships with others. Simultaneously, they learn to take care of their home, the Galápagos Islands, in a fun way with local and foreign volunteers, and the parents themselves.
One of the most significant challenges to the project has been the lack of resources to carry out field activities to promote English learning. As a result, William is grateful for Galápagos Conservancy’s support, stating that this is the first time in more than two decades that an environmental NGO has benefited the community through his program. “I applaud the momentum and support [Galápagos Conservancy] provides for local initiatives. We can continue with the Bilingual Ecological Community Center, promoting environmental awareness in the community because of these efforts.”
Galápagos Conservancy congratulates these 70 San Cristóbal Island children. This educational experience will foster their interest in cultures and customs other than their own. They will be able to communicate with people of different nationalities, nurture their culture and personal development, and gain access to a globalized world by learning English, all while learning how to preserve the wonderful Enchanted Islands.
Los jóvenes de San Cristóbal se divierten aprendiendo inglés y cuidado del medio ambiente
La mayoría de los padres son conscientes de la importancia que tiene para sus hijos aprender inglés, más aún en las islas Galápagos donde su comunidad depende en su mayoría del turismo y hablar inglés facilita estas actividades, no obstante, pocos conocen realmente cuáles son las ventajas de comenzar este aprendizaje a temprana edad.
William Puga, residente permanente de las islas Galápagos, lleva dos décadas impulsando el aprendizaje del idioma inglés con niños y jóvenes de la isla San Cristóbal, asegura que cuanto más pequeño sea el niño cuando comience a estudiar inglés (u otro idioma) más sencillo será y más beneficios le aportará.
Al mismo tiempo, utiliza el aprendizaje del idioma inglés como una herramienta de educación ambiental para enseñar a los niños y jóvenes a cuidar la biodiversidad de Galápagos. En 1995 William creó el Centro Comunitario Ecológico – Bilingüe para contribuir a la educación de la población local en temas ambientales con programas de aprendizaje vivencial sobre la importancia de proteger y conservar los ecosistemas insulares.
Desde septiembre de 2022, Galápagos Conservancy apoya este proyecto educativo a través de las subvenciones para acciones de conservación, con la finalidad de fortalecer las actividades experienciales, que incluye actividades como limpieza costera, vacaciones ecológicas, ornato de la ciudad mediante murales artísticos con mensajes de conciencia ambiental, entre otros.
Actualmente, 70 jovencitos y niños se beneficia de este programa, al aprender inglés los estudiantes tienen acceso a dos culturas distintas, por lo que se enriquecerá su educación y desarrollo intelectual y tendrán una mente más abierta hacia el mundo y en lo que respecta a su relación con los demás, y al mismo tiempo aprenden a cuidar su hogar, las islas Galápagos, de una manera divertida con voluntarios locales y extranjeros y con los mismos padres de familia.
Uno de los mayores desafíos del proyecto ha sido las limitaciones de recursos para ejecutar las actividades de campo en el aprendizaje del idioma inglés, por eso, William agradece el apoyo de Galápagos Conservancy y dijo que es la primera vez en más de dos décadas que una ONG ambientalista pone los ojos en la comunidad, “felicito el impulso y apoyo que dan a las iniciativas locales, gracias a ello podemos continuar con el Centro Comunitario Ecológico – Bilingüe promoviendo conciencia ambiental en la comunidad,” enfatizó William.
Galápagos Conservancy felicita a estos 70 niños y jóvenes de la isla San Cristóbal, esta experiencia educativa fomentará su interés por otras culturas y formas de vida distintas a la suya propia. Al aprender inglés podrán comunicarse con personas de otras nacionalidades, alimentar su cultura y desarrollo personal y tendrán acceso a un mundo globalizado, y qué mejor si al mismo tiempo aprender a conservar las maravillosas Islas Encantadas.
