From Shutter to Sanctuary: Protecting Galápagos with Photography

Diego Bermeo, a talented photographer and permanent resident of the Islands, understands the importance of capturing and sharing the Archipelago’s unique beauty. But for Bermeo, photography is more than just a hobby or a profession: it’s a tool for promoting conservation and environmental education.
With the support of Galápagos Conservancy, Bermeo launched an innovative project last year that combined his passion for photography with his commitment to environmental preservation. His goal was to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the Islands’ biodiversity and promote sustainable and responsible tourism practices.
Bermeo set out to identify the most popular and accessible recreational sites on Santa Cruz Island, where both locals and tourists could enjoy the natural beauty of the Islands. From these images, Bermeo created a collection of three e-books titled “Galápagos: La huella se queda contigo” (“Galápagos: The Footprint Stays With You”). The e-books showcase the beauty and diversity of the Islands’ ecosystems while highlighting the need to protect and preserve them for future generations.
The e-books are available for free download on Bermeo’s website and have proven to be a valuable resource for teachers, students, and visitors to Santa Cruz. Through his project, Bermeo has not only promoted environmental education but also inspired people to become more involved in protecting Galápagos.
