One of the priorities of Galápagos Conservancy is to contribute in practical ways to sustainable development in the province of Galápagos, working to guarantee a balance between economic growth, care for the environment, and social well-being.

Through a partnership with Goldman Sachs, Galápagos Conservancy funds projects by women entrepreneurs focused on sustainability in the archipelago. Recognizing that women’s empowerment through conservation can transform communities and create positive and sustainable change for people and island ecosystems is why we created WISE (Women in Sustainable Entrepeneurship).

One of these projects is Alas de Luna, led by local artist Lisseth Valdiviezo; her project was born in 2014 in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Through the creation of women’s networks and the participation of local artists, they generate cultural activities that benefit the community.

Through different art forms, Alas de Luna transmits messages about the importance of eradicating gender violence and aggression against nature.

In 2017 the project was implemented in Galápagos and allied with the Asociación Uniendo Fuerzas Formamos Futuro, a non-governmental organization based on Isabela Island with more than ten years of experience in educational and cultural projects. With this alliance, Alas de Luna reinforces its initiatives and projects of education, artistic creation and dissemination, comprehensive health, conservation, and human development for children, youth, adults, and older adults.

Since its creation, Alas de Luna has held five Cultural Encounters of Creative Women, three of which were carried out in the Galápagos Islands.

In November 2021, Galápagos Conservancy signed an agreement to finance the activities of Alas de Luna and hold the fifth edition of the Cultural Encounters. This event lasted 12 days and included the participation of 15 national and international artists who shared their art with the Galápagos community, benefiting some 2,000 people from the Santa Cruz and Isabela islands.

Galápagos Conservancy funds also made possible the realization of two additional cultural events, known as “Ferias Luneras”, in March on San Cristóbal Island and in April on Isabela Island. The fairs consisted of outdoor events with the participation of local artists and artisans, complemented by art workshops for women and young people from both islands.

Since Alas de Luna arrived in the Galápagos province, it has provided cultural spaces and training opportunities to the island community. More than 7,000 youth, children, adults, and seniors have benefited from its cultural and environmental initiatives.

Their work continues and focuses on generating spaces that promote the integral development of the human being, social cohesion, and harmony with nature, using art as a tool for social transformation.

Lisseth Valdiviezo, leader of Alas de Luna, assures that her work continues and focuses on generating spaces that promote the integral development of the human being, social cohesion, and harmony with nature, using art as a tool for social transformation.
