United Nations: Galapagos is a 'Sensitive Zone'
December 1, 2005
From El Diario

The U.N. General Assembly declared the Galapagos Islands an “Extremely Sensitive Zone” in an effort to promote environmental protection of the archipelago, which is threatened by illegal fishing, tourism, and toxic dumping.

According to a press release, the declaration is the result of combined efforts of the U.N., the British Embassy, the Ecuadorian Navy, and other environmental organizations.

This designation will improve maritime security and navigation, as well as safeguard the main ecosystems of the islands.

As a result of these measures, vessels transporting hazardous or dangerous materials weighing more than 500 tons will have to steer clear of the area, by the authority of the International Maritime Organization (OIM).
