Long-lining Prohibited

The Galapagos Inter-Institutional Management Authority (AIM) passed a resolution yesterday that prohibits long-lining, a method of fishing that conservationists do not approve of because it results in a high level of by-catch, in the Galapagos Marine Reserve (GMR).

At the request of the fishing industry, the AIM analyzed proposals for long-line fishing at a depth of 60 meters where, according to the fishing sector, such an activity would result in limited by-catch and less ecological impact.

However, the AIM rejected this proposal and has effectively prohibited long-lining in the GMR at any depth. Previously, the AIM had prohibited long-lining.

Rogelio Guaycha, President of the Cooperative Union of Galapagos Fishers, does not accept this resolution.

La Autoridad Interinstitucional de Manejo de Galápagos (AIM) emitió ayer una resolución que prohíbe la pesca con palangre (arte de pesca no permitido por los conservacionistas porque captura muchas especies), en la reserva marina.

Por pedido del sector pesquero, la AIM analizó la propuesta de la pesca con palangre a partir de los 60 metros de profundidad, lo que, según los pescadores, produciría una menor pesca incidental y un menor impacto ecológico.

Pero la AIM rechazó la propuesta con lo que queda prohibida la pesca con palangre a cualquier profundidad. Anteriormente, había prohibido el uso de palangre.

Por su parte, Rogelio Guaycha, presidente de la Unión de Cooperativas de Pesca de Galápagos, no aceptó dicha resolución.
