Galapagos Culinary Students Experience Their First Event

The first two months of the Colegio Nacional Galapagos Culinary program are now behind us.  The program is off to a fantastic start with 27 students participating.  These months have been a learning experience for everyone.  The style of teaching, both in practice and in theory, is completely new for these students.  They are finding the program very challenging and having to work at a much higher level then they ever have.  At the same time, the teachers are also learning to adjust their thinking to a level that these young adults are able to comprehend.  The Galapagos teachers observing the program have provided good support for the culinary teaching staff.  They are working hard to build their knowledge of the theory classes so they will be ready to teach next year.

On June 19, Colegio National Galapagos celebrated their 37th anniversary.  The school directors and local community officials were on hand to recap the development of the school and to honor students with high achievements.  A number of supporters for the school were also honored including our Vasco Baselli and myself for our work in planning and developing the culinary program.  The Charles Darwin Research Station was also honored for their invaluable support in coordinating donations for the project.

Following the anniversary event, the students had their first “hands-on” practice preparing and serving a 3 course meal for 50 honorary guests.  Nerves were on edge at the beginning of the evening but, the students delivered with both professionalism and with the excitement of embarking on their future careers.  The students have a new found respect for the challenges faced and the energy needed to be successful in the food services industry.  It was an evening of great pride for the culinary program and was truly appreciated by the attendees.
