Migration to Galapagos
In 1950, the population of Galapagos was 1,346 people, and by 2001 there were 18,640 residents. The figures are clear--the population has grown 13.8 fold in 50 years.
Galapagos is the fastest growing province in Ecuador. It is estimated to grow about 6% per year.
The figures are a wake-up call to international organizations and national and local authorities. The growing numbers add to the pressures on the natural resources of the islands. In 1998, the Special Law for Galapagos came into being, and one of its objectives is to regulate migration and check effectively the population growth in the archipelago.
A workshop is investigating how best to apply the new control policies.
